Free Agent Friday: RHP Jake Odorizzi

With just 10 days before Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training, the hunt is on for a veteran starting pitcher. There may be an option available that is just one year removed from an all-star season to help the Pirates rotation. We are just 10 days away from Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training, and there is still one Major hole on this team. The starting rotation is almost completely void of veteran leadership, something this young group needs. Out of the possible starters this year, Chad Kuhl is the only one who has pitched through a full season and he is just a year removed from Tommy John surgery. With many of the Pirate's top pitching prospects still over a year away, the team is looking for someone to come in and eat innings when needed. This person would also help mentor the young pitchers for the first half of the season, and more than likely be flipped for prospects at the trade deadline. One option still available on t...

Free Agent Friday: Pirates Said to be Scouting Corey Kluber

Image
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber has missed a majority of the last two seasons with a shoulder injury. The right-hander is looking to make his way back to the MLB, and the Pirates are said to be one of the team's scouting him. A few years ago, starting pitcher Corey Kluber was at the top of his game with the Cleveland Indians. He was a two-time Cy Young Award winner and helped lead the Indians to the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, including a World Series appearance in 2016. However, injuries have caused him to pitch in just 36.2 innings of work over the last two seasons. He has announced that he will be holding a work out on Monday and inviting scouts across the league to watch his workout. He is looking to prove that at 34-years-old he still has what it takes to be a Big League starting pitcher. With the starting pitching market thin, there is no doubt several teams will be there to observe the right-hander. There are several other teams scouting K...

Free Agent Fridays: Ben Gamel

The Pittsburgh Pirates are searching for some outfield depth in 2021, and there is a young free agent available for the taking. 28-year-old Ben Gamel could give the Pirates the boost they need in the outfield. One of the biggest question marks for the 2021 Pirates, besides the starting rotation, is who will be in the outfield. There are some locks like Bryan Reynolds and Gregory Polanco, but the third position is a toss-up between Anthony Alford and Jared Oliva, neither of which has played a full MLB season. Ben Cherington has gone on the record to say that he is looking for outfield help, but he has to go with someone who may factor into the Pirate's future plans. That means bringing in a young talent that the Pirates can control for a couple of years while they try and build a winning ball club. He doesn't necessarily have to be an everyday starter, just someone to provide depth for the team in the long-run. A look at the market shows one of these young, controlla...

Free Agent Friday's: Delino DeShields

Image
One of the positions that the Pittsburgh Pirates are truly lacking is a true centerfield option. Free-agent center fielder Delino DeShields could offer the Pirates a solid option in center field and atop the Pirates lineup. For the Pirates, center field is one position on the field where they are lacking a true #1 option. Cole Tucker, Anthony Alford, and Jared Oliva are all options to start this season, but none of them have had sustained MLB success. With Travis Swaggerty on the horizon, the Pirates aren't necessarily looking for a long-term option, just someone to fill in for a couple of seasons. A young outfielder with some big league experience that can add some competition to Spring Training will not only make centerfield better but make the whole team that much better. One fairly new addition to the Free Agent market could be the answer the Pirates are looking for. On Wednesday, the Cleveland Indians decided to non-tender outfielder Delino DeShields, making him a ...
